J.E. Healy Ford Authorized Sales and Service was granted a Ford franchise from the Ford Motor Company and became a dealership. In 1922, John and Ralph Zook partnered with J.E. and W.S. Calderwood to purchase J.E. Healy’s business in Kane. Eighty-six years later, Zook Motors still stands strong. John & Ruth Zook moved to the area in the early 1920’s. Soon after that, John and his partners purchased their dealership at 22 Field Street in Kane. In 1925, John Zook became the sole owner of the business, renaming it Midway Garage due to Kane’s location midway between Buffalo and Pittsburgh. In 1949, John Zook’s son, John, who still owns the dealership today, started working for the garage in the body shop. On January 1, 1950 the dealership incorporated and officially changed its name to Zook Motors, Inc. Along with its changing name, the dealership began to expand. On Aug. 9, 1958, Zook Motors bought an old TV repair shop building located at 24 Field Street, known as the Zega Building, and turned it into a showroom. Sadly, dealership founder, John Zook, died shortly thereafter in Jan. 1969. While Zook’s son, John worked in the body shop and later the service department at the dealership after his father’s death, Bruce Zook, another son of the late, John Zook, took over as general manager. Together with his wife Carol and his sales manager Greg Rich , Bruce would run the dealership for over three decades; cementing Zook Motors as a pillar of commerce in Kane as well as Northwestern Pennsylvania. In 1984, both Bruce Zook and Greg Rich passed away. Greg on January 25th and Bruce on February 21st. As John Zook continued running the dealership, a new generation of Zooks became involved in the family business in 1985. John’s daughter, Susan Zook Wilson, started working for the dealership, and in 1991, she took over as the dealership’s General Manager. Under the guidance of Zook and Wilson, the dealership continued to expand. In 1985, property was bought across the street, formerly known as Mr. P’s Tavern. In 1996, another Zook joined the crew when John’s son, Ken, graduated from Ford Asset Training at Allegheny Community College. Today he’s a Senior Master Technician, the highest level a technician can achieve. In January 2000, the dealership expanded again by buying Halcolm Bard’s property at 19 Field Street. After this purchase, the Zooks realized there was nowhere else to grow on Field Street. On April 16, 2002, with the help of several agencies and surrounding municipalities, Zook Motors broke ground at a site located just outside of Kane in Wetmore Township. On Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002, the dealership celebrated its grand opening at its new location and current site at 25 Willow Run Drive, on Route 6 West of Kane. Today, Zook Motors stands as Pennsylvania’s 11th oldest Ford dealership, which means it exists within 15 miles of its original location and has been owned by the same family since it opened. With 86 years of experience in town, Zook Motors is ready to serve its loyal customers for years to come.
